Apple replaced the 27″ iMac in 2022 with the Mac Studio + Studio Display combo, which delivers 27″ 5K, more powerful M-series silicon, and the ability to upgrade the computer or the display independently. The trade-off: it costs $3,000+ new versus a refurbished 27″ iMac at $1,000–$2,000. For most photo, video, code, and design workflows the refurbished 27″ iMac is still excellent value — especially since macOS still supports it through 2025+.
Apple discontinued the 27″ iMac in March 2022 when it transitioned to Apple silicon. The 27″ was Intel-only and Apple chose to replace its all-in-one role with the modular Mac Studio + Studio Display rather than make a 27″ Apple silicon iMac. The 27″ iMac’s 5K Retina P3 display tech actually became the Studio Display.
macOS Sequoia (released 2024) is the last macOS to support Intel iMacs. Apple’s next macOS will be Apple-silicon-only. That said, Sequoia gets security updates for 2–3 more years (typical pattern), and the 27″ iMac will continue to run all current Pro apps (Final Cut, Logic Pro, Adobe CC, Microsoft 365) for years to come. For mission-critical 5+ year planning, consider the M-series Mac Studio. For 2–3 year value, the 27″ iMac is hard to beat.
Yes — the 27″ iMac is the ONLY iMac with user-upgradable RAM. It uses standard DDR4 SO-DIMM slots accessible through a small door on the back. You can upgrade up to 128GB total. This is huge for video editors, photographers, and developers who can buy more RAM as projects grow. Both the 24″ iMac and iMac Pro have soldered RAM that cannot be upgraded.
Always go SSD. Fusion Drive (a small SSD + large spinning HDD) was Apple’s budget compromise — it’s significantly slower than pure SSD and the spinning drive can fail. Every 27″ iMac at MacPro-LA listed as “SSD” is pure NAND flash. Avoid Fusion Drive units unless you’re willing to upgrade later.
