The Mac mini + your own monitor is more flexible (you pick the screen) and lets you upgrade the monitor independently. Pick the iMac for design, simplicity, and a fixed setup; pick the Mac mini if you already own a great monitor or want to mix and match.
Apple has shipped three: M1 (2021, 8-core CPU, 7 or 8-core GPU), M3 (2023, 8-core CPU, 8 or 10-core GPU), and M4 (2024, 8 or 10-core CPU, 8 or 10-core GPU). All three drive the 4.5K Retina P3 display beautifully. M3 and M4 add hardware ray-tracing for 3D and gaming. M4 jumped to TSMC’s N3E process and added Apple Intelligence support and tighter memory bandwidth.
8GB is fine for browsing, email, Pages/Numbers, Photos, and casual photo editing. 16GB is the sweet spot for the typical home user, students, and creators with multiple browser tabs and Lightroom open at once. 24GB and 32GB are for power users running Final Cut, Logic Pro, large Photoshop files, and several apps simultaneously. RAM is soldered to the chip — it cannot be upgraded later, so size up if you can.
Almost — the M1 and M3 ship in all 7 colors (Silver, Pink, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Purple). The M4 also ships in 7 colors but Apple swapped Silver for “Robin’s Egg” blue and added new shades. The base 24″ iMac M1 uses a 7-core GPU (instead of 8) and has only 2 USB-C ports (no Thunderbolt). The 8-core GPU model adds two extra USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports (4 total), Touch ID on the Magic Keyboard, and Gigabit Ethernet built into the power brick. For most home users the 7-core base is fine; for creators who want more accessories, go 8-core or higher.
